I’m Kevin Mazur. I’m a husband, father of two grown sons, and best friend to a remarkable dog named Foley Meir Mazur. I’ve spent more than 22 years working in IT, mostly thinking about how systems fit together and how to make them useful to people.
Lately, much of my attention has been on AI. I think we’re at a crossroads with it. There’s enormous potential to make things better, and enormous potential to cause harm. I want to explore the useful possibilities while taking the risks seriously.
What I’m working on
At the Hillsborough County Property Appraiser’s office, I’m beginning to develop a formal AI policy and plan. That means thinking through how people should use AI, how we protect data, how we judge whether its answers are reliable, and how we prepare for misuse.
I’m interested in how AI can help us serve the public better. At HCPA, that includes finding ways to make information faster and easier for people to access and understand. We’re at the beginning of that work, and I want to be thoughtful about what we build and how people will use it.
What I’m learning
Outside work, I use AI to research questions, handle repetitive tasks, and understand things like my health data. It has also let me build software I once only imagined building. I know a great deal about how IT systems work together, but I didn’t spend my career writing code. AI has given me a way to put that experience to work in a different form.
One example is Helix, an app I built for our IT department to bring day-to-day work into one place. It’s new, so I can’t claim results for the team yet. Building it has already changed what I think I’m capable of making.
That’s why this site exists. I want to document what I’m trying, what I’m learning, and where my thinking changes. I’ll share these pieces on LinkedIn and Threads, where the conversation can continue. I expect some of my views to change. Putting them into words is one way to find out which ones hold up.
